Dear Martin,
it was just few days ago that I sent my subscription mail to the list
server, so I could not read your message before today.
I was in Patagonia last year were we tried to climb the north face of Fitz
Roy in august. Our efforts were frustrated by the strong wind, and this is
the first answer for you. Weather in winter is generally more stable than in
summer, with a temperature reaching -15/-20 degrees C but with a greater
chanche to have sun and no wind. We were not lucky last year as we could
have only 2 sunny days on a total of 20 we stayed at the base camp; the
temperature was not lower than -10 C but we suffered stormy weather
continuously for more than 10 days. On the other hand the park guardian told
us than in july they had 15 days of full sun! It's a matter of luck.
You don't nedd any permission to visit the Chalten park (where Fitz Roy,
Cerro Torre and so on are located); you only must register yourself at the
park office in El Chalten at your arrival. Remeber that in Patagonia winter
is not a touristic season, so if on one hand this guarantees you a peaceful
holiday on the other hand transport organization in this season is not so
good. If you want to reach Fitz Roy region you must book a car in El
Calafate but this can be quite expensive. You can ask Jorge Lemons, a local
guide, for help. No problem for accomodation (at all prices).
Have a good walk (or climb?) in Patagonia.
