Hi Anthony,
I'm not much of a skier but I can offer an answer to your ice axe question.
The selection of an ice axe depends on what you plan to do with it. For general
mountianeering activities where you would be doing such things as climbing and
traversing
steep snow you should have one longer than a technical axe but not so long that
it touches
the ground if you hold it by the head with you arm extended down. In general an
ice axe
is carried on the uphill side and in steep terrain a long axe can be a real
pain.
Additionally, it is more awkward to selfarrest with a long axe.
I'm on the east coast but I'd love to hear about what you get involved with.:-)
