Concerning ice axes and crampons ... Good quality and a design to meet
the requirements of the primary mountaineering style/emphasis are the
best guidelines. The design of both axes and crampons will vary along
the continuum of activities from alpine snow climbing to ascending
waterfall ice. The other factor is overall quality - you get what you
pay. I suggest that you consider making the move west then link up with
some experienced snow/ice climbers. Such persons often have extra gear
that you may be able to borrow and try out. A backup plan would be to
rent gear for awhile to enable hands-on use before purchase. There
should be plenty of equipment shops out there that will rent as well as
sell you what you need, or just want, once you get there. Reviews of
alpine gear have been done in "Climbing" and "Rock & Ice" magazines over
the past year and a half.
