In a really soft spot it becomes difficult to get enough bite with
the ice tool to stay on the tree. To add to the fun sometimes a swing
produces a shower of termites. A greater hazard is that to much
banging on the tree down lower will break off sometime up high and
send it crashing down. I must admit that the gear will need a bit of
clean up afterward, but the soft decaying wood pulp comes off easily
and doesn't tear up the gear.

Ah well - i can see the appeal now *grin*

i had one ice-climbing experience - Stob Corrie Nan Bith (sp?) in
Glen Coe at New Year. The weather was so bad we only got out one day,
and we ended up topping out in an ice blizzard at 6.00 pm with one
head- torch between three of us after 6 hrs of powder snow wading. i
managed to crampon both outers, one inner, my gaiters, my waterproofs
and my thigh. To add insult to injury we got back to the campsite at
gone 11.00 and the pub was shut.

trees must be more fun....even with termites.
