Subj: Re: Altitude Sickness
Posted-date: 19-Sep-1994
Living in upstate New York, altitude opportunities are also limited(Mt. Marcy
won't help). Aside from hereditary dispositions, which may render you more or
less inclined to suffer altitude sickness, sound conditioning is always good
advice. My favorite is running. One old adage(of limited usefulness probably)
is 'run your age' in minutes to be assured of endurance-base conditioning. My
own empirical evidence suggests that hydration is often overlooked as a
triggering factor in altitude sickness. Simply put: stay hydrated and AS can
be avoided or minimized. Some research has suggested that to be true. I have
generally stayed away from medications and drugs, preferring to suffer my
8000-9000 foot headache for an evening than to try and out-dope it. And there
is always the option to become a sea-level rock-climber. Good luck. Jim
